The objective of this research is to present and analyze, as a collective phenomenon, the emergence of reflections on the literary fact that Juan Benet, Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio, Carmen Martín Gaite, Juan Goytisolo, and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán began to articulate in the last half of the 1960s, contrasting their poetics with the previous social realist paradigm of the 1950s. The aim is to investigate the literary thought of these five aforementioned authors by examining certain dimensions of the complex relationship between literature, reality, and society, which were either frustrated, forgotten, or trivialized in the previous aesthetic framework. Specifically, I will address the epistemological dimension of literature in the case of Benet, the ontological dimension in the case of Ferlosio, the pragmatic/psychological dimension concerning Martín Gaite, and the socio-political dimension in the case of Goytisolo and Vázquez Montalbán. Through this analysis, I intend to highlight how these discourses contribute to reintroducing complexity into the debate on literary realism, confronting key issues in the history of modern and contemporary literature.
