Abstract
This patent describes an apparatus for the partial gasification of granular coal with air. It comprises: a tubular reactor having combined air and granular coal inlet mean for tangentially introducing air and granular coal into the reactor for partial combustion. The air inlet being adjusted to supply less than the amount of air required for complete combustion of the granular coal; external heating means adjacent the reactor; including control means for regulating the amount of heat supplied to the reactor; insulating means for maintenance of an ignition temperature by heat generated during the combustion at a temperature 50 to 100{degrees} Fahrenheit below the ash fusion temperature of the ash produced by the combustion; and exit means for removing a partial combusted mixture of coke, ash and combustion gases.
