Abstract
The depth of the pool is fixed by the height of water necessary for shielding. The side dimensions are determined by the utilization of the reactor and the dimensions of the body to be submerged. The basis of the calculations made on the dimensions of the pool, the materials used, and the construction is reviewed. The "Grands Travaux de Marseille" procedure of prestressing was used for the Melusine and the Freyssinet procedure for the Triton. The characteristics of the concretes used are given. Tests for water tightness and methods for the evaluation of water losses are described. The apparatuses which pass through the walls or which are placed in the concrete are discussed and the restrictions imposed on the engineering by their presence are considered. (J.S.R.)
