Abstract
Thermal Protection Systems. Coatings of Ws ZrO/sub 2/, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Al were applied to slip-cast fused silica for evaluation in the exhaust of the oxyhydrogen motor. The thermal conductivity of slip-cast fused silica was found to vary linearly with temperature over a range from 420 to 1350 F with values of 0.36 and 0.42 (Btu)-(ft)/ (hr) (sq ft) ( F), respectively. Data were obtained by exposing one-half-inch-thick slip-cast fused silica slabs at various angles to the exhaust of the oxyhydrogen motor. Coatings. A variety of powdered refractory materials was obtained for use in the arc spray gun. During preliminary operation, coatings were obtained from ZrO/sub 2/, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, TiO/sub 2/, W, WC, CaZrO/sub 3/, B/sub 4/C, HfO/sub 2/, and MgO. A technique for forming thin shapes by flame spraying onto a removable brass pattern was developed. Thermets. Certain physical properties of Be-chromic oxide thermets were determined using either BeO or Cr as the reaction throttler. (W.L.H.)
