Abstract
In the last few years investigattons made on organic compounds have established the suitability of polyphenyls as reactor moderators and coolants. The introduction of these materials necessitates an accurate knowledge of the behavior of organic compounds under irradiation. The present report gives a survey on the principal results of works published up to the present. The topics discussed are the necessary characteristics of moderators and coolants, organic substances studied and used, measurement of products formed by heat and radiation effects, dependence on the type of radiation, pyrolysis, radiolysis, mixtures of different polyphenyls, and some operational data from organic cooled and moderated reactors. 116 references.
