Abstract
This paper discussed experimental searches for permanent electric dipole moments of atoms using optical pumping techniques to achieve high precision frequency shift measurements. Experiments sensitive to either nuclear or electron spin dependent manifestations of broken time reversal symmetry are outlined. Limits for various models, obtained from an experiment on /sup 129/Xe are given.
