Abstract
The operation of completing a well refers to the mechanical completion of the well once the pay zone has been drilled. However, the design of the actual completion is influenced by casing schemes including the selection of the production casing and the nature of the fluid used to drill through the producing or injection zone. In view of the high costs involved in North Sea developments and of the limited number of drainage points, the design of the well completion is crucial to the economic viability of the field development project. By considering the oil fields in the N. North Sea basins and the gas fields of the southern basin, the completion strings and practices adopted and proposed by a large number of operating companies are compared. It is clear that since no 2 reservoirs are exactly the same, a completely standardized approach to completion is out of the question and therefore a fair variety of completion methods and strings necessarily exists. This work outlines the alternatives available at each stage of the completion design. 12 references.
