Abstract
Translated from Geomagn. Aeron.; 13: No. 2, 325-329(1973)The existing hypotheses explaining the nature of the jet current in the auroral zone are analyzed. An example of a model of a gyrotropic plane ionosphere containing an elliptical conductivity inhomogeneity is used to show that the most effective mechanism for the creation of the auroral electrojet is a magnetospheric current flowing in in the morning sector and flowing out in the evening sector. This case is subjected to a detailed analysis.(auth)
