Abstract
Following an introduction on the nature of Inhalation hazards, the properties of aerosols, and the size and size distribution of aerosol particles, techniques for producing monodisperse and polydispers e aerosols for instrument calibration and inhalation experiments and techniques for measuring the concentration, size distribution, and respirable fractions of aerosols are discussed. These techniques include filtration; electrostatic precipitation; light-scattering measurements; horizontal and centriiugal elutriation and spectrometry; particle size distributions; definition and measurement of respirable activity; and measurement of diffusivity, surfuce area, and particulate volume. This work is of particular value to industrial hygienists and physicians, health physicists, inhalation toxicologists, and others involved in evaluating the hazards of inhaling toxic particles. (LCL)
