Abstract
In the Barrancas and Piedras Coloradas fields of the Mendoza district of Argentina, the YPF had severe water channeling problems from its injection wells. Flow profiles showed a poor distribution of the injected water, and in some instances 100% of it was entering the top layer only, and rapidly channeling to the producing wells. In some instances, water production from wells near the injection wells rose rapidly from a small percentage to 60 and 70%, and when injection was stopped, again fell to the original small percentage. Some injection wells had casing leaks. Repair work on the injection wells included sealing off the casing leaks with cement, packing off and cementing the high-permeability zones, and stimulating the other zones with acid. The work was highly successful.
