Abstract
The United States remains the world's fourth most populous nation, but the 1980 census indicates its population has undergone changes portending profound effects on how Americans will live and how societal institutions, such as electric utilities, will serve them. The children of the baby boom are producing an echo boom in new geographical areas and playing havoc with the distribution of public services. At the same time, the increasing ranks of elderly people are straining retirement and health care funds. 21 references, 2 figures, 4 tables.
