Abstract
Despite the evolution from gas shortage to gas surplus, the process of recovering methane gas from landfills (LFG) continues to develop into an important part of the natural gas industry as industries search for less expensive sources of energy. LFG also offers local governments a new source of income and reduces complaints of pollution from nearby residents. If local governments can use the gas, there are double savings. The author reviews landfill gas processing, lease negotiations for an LFG recovery project, and some of the legal issues to be dealt with as the project proceeds from the test to the operational phase and payment of royalties. She cites major clauses to include in the lease agreement to deal with these issues.
