Abstract
A quantitative theory is proposed to explain the extent of deformation occurring during alpha / BETA cycling of uranium and the observations of others on iron. From the theory and the experimental results, the value of Y, the yield stress of the alpha phase at the transformation temperature, is deduced to be 600 g/mm/sup 2/. Thus, close correlation between theory and experiment was obtained. An equation describing the strain epsilon /sub n/ occurring after n coraplete cycles under small applied stress sigma is given.
