Abstract
Mexican oil development shows evidence that the country is suffering the symptoms of macroeconomic problems seen in Persian Gulf countries. This is seen in unplanned, rapid growth of the petroleum industry and a failure to eliminate the inflationary gap before expanding. An inflationary gap cannot be maintained between two countries with such a long common border without weakening Mexico's financial system. A prudent oil policy that decelerates growth will still continue to experience some tug-of-war effects between anti-inflationary policies and the pressures for an oil boom. 3 references, 6 figures, 9 tables.
