Abstract
The behavior of the cross section for elastic pp scattering beyond the second maximum is determined on the basis of the unitarity condition and the experimentally known form of the differential cross section within the diffraction peak. It is shown that the cross section for scattering at FNAL and ISR energies falls off exponentially with increasing momentum transfer in the region beyond the second maximum up to Vertical BartVertical Barapprox. =15 GeV/sup 2/.Quantitative predictions of the argument of the exponential are in satisfactory agreement with experiment. The contribution to the unitarity condition from inelastic processes is also discussed.
