Abstract
Tuberculosis is a common disease worldwide. In Sweden the incidence is low; 6,9 /100 000/year. More than one third of the tuberculosis cases are notified in the Stockholm County. A majority of the cases are seen in young adults born outside Sweden. The incidence among children is low. A retrospective study was performed of all children (n=309) having a diagnosis related to tuberculosis and attending Barnens Sjukhus, Huddinge 1999–2004. Eight children had tuberculosis. 197 children had latent tuberculosis i.e. had been infected with tuberculosis. Five children with tuberculosis and 94 children with latent tuberculosis were identified through tuberculosis screening at their health examination when arriving in Sweden. These results support tuberculosis screening as an identification method of active tuberculosis and latent tuberculosis in children.
