Abstract
This study aimed to investigate clinician and patient preference of multimedia-enhanced radiology reports (MERRs, referred to as “multimedia” reports which automatically embed key data and images) over text-only “standard” reports, using MRI staging of prostate cancer as an exploratory pilot study. This prospective study explored opinions of MERRs using a structured questionnaire and for patients, an online discussion. Three men had MERR prepared, in addition to standard of care clinical reports. 15 clinicians and 8 patients were recruited with 5 patients completing the online discussion. The survey data was summarised with descriptive statistics. Data from the discussion was analysed using thematic analysis aided by reflexive notes. Clinicians were undecided in their preference with the median score equalling “neither prefer structured nor standard report” and the majority (8/15) preferring availability of both report styles. Patients were undecided in their preference (median score = no preference), and most would prefer availability of both report styles (7/8). Reported advantages of multimedia reports include image clarity, ability to share images for teaching, treatment planning and communication, and layout. Disadvantages included lack of summary, and for the patient arm, the potential to cause confusion if disseminated without explanation. Participants from both arms were undecided in reporting style preference; however, they highlighted multiple potential advantages of multimedia reports over standard reports, but potential to cause confusion if patients received MERR without further explanation of the content.
