Abstract
AS41(Al–4%, Si–1%, Mg-bal.) and AZ91 (Al–9%, Zn–1%, Mg-bal.) alloys and AZ91 composite reinforced with 5 wt% silicon carbide (SiC) particles were synthesized through flux and fluxless liquid metallurgy procedures. The microstructural and mechanical behaviour of the magnesium alloys and AZ91 composite was evaluated in this study. Obtained results show that magnesium alloys and AZ91 composite could be easily made through a fluxless liquid stir-casting process without any dross entrapment, and excellent mechanical properties in as-cast conditions of the materials are achieved on the other hand. When the fluxes are used, the melt and casting may get contaminated with dross leading to inferior microstructure and mechanical properties. The magnesium composite exhibited uniform distribution of SiC particles with a strong interface with the matrix and a 15–20% improvement in strength.
