Abstract
Fracture behaviour of a reactor pressure vessel steel has been studied under dynamic strain ageing (DSA) conditions. Severity of DSA is varied by changing both the loading rate and test temperature. Significant reduction in fracture toughness is noted at 235∘C, which is recovered with further increase of temperature at slow loading rate. DSA influence on fracture behaviour diminished with temperature at fast loading rate. DSA led to repeated crack tip blunting and “ridge-valley” fractographic features. Defining the stretch zone boundary was difficult in such cases, and applying stretch zone method for determination of initiation fracture resistance seemed to be inappropriate.
