Abstract
Background: Due to the massive use of the internet, online smoking cessation interventions have great potential to tackle the smoking problem in the Netherlands.Aim: The aim of the study is to 1) provide an overview of the online smoking cessation interventions in the Netherlands (looking at effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and inclusion of theory), and 2) to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of an alternate package (including online smoking interventions) compared with existing smoking cessation services alone (current package).Method: To identify the Dutch online smoking cessation interventions, we have consulted 1) scientific literature, 2) gray literature, and 3) expert input. This resulted in 45 interventions, of which six have been reported in the scientific literature. We used the EQUIPTMOD to calculate the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios for different time horizons to assess the value of providing internet-based interventions to complement the current package. Results: Only six online smoking cessation interventions were identified in the scientific literature. The provision of internet-based intervention to the current package was dominant (cost-saving) compared with the current package alone, already after two years. Conclusion: Online smoking cessation interventions – especially the interactive, tailored online programs – have a strong potential to be cost-saving in the Netherlands.
