Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between sleep deprivation at age 11–12 and mental health problems at age 15–16 in the Dutch population. We also explored if this association was sex dependent.Method: We used questionnaires from phase 4 and 5 of the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) study. We included 1.186 adolescents. Mental health problems were defined based on a self-reported total SDQ-score (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), with a score ≥ 16 indicating problems. Parents who reported sleep duration of their child at 11–12 years less than 9 hours was defined as deprivation. Children with prolonged sleep duration (> 12 hours) were excluded. Results: There was a significant association (p = 0,048) between sleep deprivation and elevated SDQ-score (odds ratio 2,12 (95%-confidence interval 1,01–4,47; p = 0,048)) after controlling for sex, migration history, education level, major life events, family situation, financial situation and parental education. There was no evidence for sex dependency. Conclusion: Sleep deprivation at ages 11–12 seems to be a predictor for mental health problems at ages 15–16. Further investigation is necessary before national prevention programs can be designed. This study shows the importance of counseling individual teens for an adequate amount of sleep in daily practice.
