Abstract
The article gives an insight into the development of the movement-supporting, psychosocial intervention “mindmittens” in boxing for girls and young women with low self-concept. Based on self-concept theories and self-determination theory, a theory-driven intervention based on intervention mapping is developed. The intervention was piloted and evaluated in a control group pre-post design with n = 21 for the intervention group (Mage = 15.38) and n = 20 for the control group (Mage = 15.15). At both measurement times, the participants filled out the Physical Self-Inventory and the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Scale. In addition, the intervention group answered a questionnaire for a formative evaluation. The results partially confirm the expected increase in self-concept after participating in the intervention. The physical self-concept of the intervention group approaches that of the control group (PSI-S‑R total scale: F (1, 39) = 5.352; p = 0.026; η2 = 0.121; physical self-esteem: F (1, 39) = 5.069; p = 0.030; η2 = 0.115; physical strength: F (1, 39) = 7.459; p = 0.009; η2 = 0.161). No significant changes in the global self-concept or self-esteem are found. The results of the formative evaluation show that most of the participants rated all areas from comprehensibility to future use of the exercises as predominantly positive.
