Abstract
Background: Podcasts have been established as an auditive medium in scientific communication. Both relevance and use of medical podcasts have increased in recent years. The aim of the work reported here was to use this medium for the prevention of occupational skin cancer (BK No. 5103) for outdoor workers. Methods: Initially, a literature search was conducted in the databases PubMed, PSYNDEX and Cochrane Library with the aim of gaining an overview of the research landscape. Considering the guideline on evidence-based health information, a podcast episode was designed, in which an outdoor worker was involved to link theory and practice. In the context of the piloting with 6 people, a guideline-oriented group discussion took place to assess the podcast with the help of the addressees. Results: Three studies were identified in the course of the literature search. These provide an overview of English-language podcasts in the field of dermatology which have different formats and address different groups of people (such as patients). Furthermore, a 16 min podcast episode was designed, recorded and tested by participants: they rated the episode positively, judged the selected content to be very easy to understand and pointed out further information needs beyond this offer. Conclusion: The results of the literature research clarify that there has been a lack of studies on German-language podcasts to date. Our study points to the potential of the medium ‘podcast’ as being suitable in the field of occupational dermatological prevention in many ways, e.g. in connection with occupational safety measures.
