Abstract
In recent years the content of first trimester ultrasound screening has changed from a simple measurement of nuchal translucency to a detailed examination of the fetal anatomy. As a result of the increasing experience of examiners and improved ultrasound technology, a large number of severe fetal malformations can now be detected in the first trimester. Recently published national and international guidelines highlight both the minimum requirements and the potential of ultrasound between 11 and 14 weeks. In this review, the systematic approach to ultrasound examination in the first trimester and typical signs of selected malformations are discussed.
