Abstract
A serendipitous beginning led to three eventful and exciting summers with the USGS for young Elwyn Blake, Jr. who signed on initially as a rodman and evolved into an expert river runner. Blake was the only man to be on all three surveys of the Colorado River Basin. Author Richard Westwood, Blake’s nephew, reconstructs those trips, the San Juan in 1921, the upper Green in 1922, and the Grand Canyon 1923, using Blake’s and other participants’ field notes, Blake’s autobiography, and other sources. The result is a detailed record of the USGS’s efforts to map the difficult river system and an exciting account of the adventures, hardships, mishaps, and personal conflicts that occurred on the expeditions. Foreword by Bruce Babbitt.
