Abstract
The present study was aimed at examining the feasibility of using common reed for the production of bioethanol by means of physical and chemical pretreatments. The effectiveness of H₂O₂, NaOH, and methanol for conversion of common reed to ethanol was investigated via chemical pretreatments. Steam explosion pretreatment caused a high percentage of monosaccharides with relatively reduced xylose and arabinose proportions. Statistical analysis showed that 1% H₂O₂ pretreatment had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on lignin removal of steam exploded common reed. Therefore, the 1% H₂O₂ method is more efficient in improving the enzymatic hydrolysis of common reed. After 48 h of fermentation of the sequentially steam explosion/1% H₂O₂-pretreated reed, the final ethanol production yield was 18% based on the dry weight of the raw material. Consequently, common reed was high feasible for sustainable bioethanol production.
