Abstract
(N Engl J Med. 2022;386:757–767)Zika virus circulated extensively in Brazil in the recent epidemic and is implicated as a teratogen in pregnancies by transplacental fetal exposure. A wide spectrum of effects presents as congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), ranging from no detected abnormalities to severe impacts on the central nervous system and death in infancy or childhood in 10% of cases. Observed anomalies include microcephaly, dysphagia, or epilepsy apparent at birth or infancy with first trimester Zika exposure recognized as the strongest predictive factor of severity.
