(N Engl J Med. 2020;382:525–533)Maternal vitamin D deficiency may be a factor in the development of asthma in infants according to some observational studies. The study authors previously conducted the Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial (VDAART) and reported prenatal vitamin D supplementation was associated with reduced rates of asthma and recurrent wheeze in 3-year-old children. This study reports on the follow-up of the children in the VDAART study group through their sixth birthday to determine the effects of prenatal vitamin D supplementation on the incidence of asthma and recurrent wheeze.
