Abstract
Title: Aortic valve calcium score by multi-detector CT in aortic sclerosisPurpose : Aortic valve calcification is a poor prognostic factor in aortic stenosis. However, there are few studies about the clinical meaning of aortic valve calcification in aortic sclerosis. We aimed to find out the correlation of aortic sclerosis grading and quantitive measurement of aortic valve calcium by CT.Methods: 100 subjects (M:F = 58: 42, mean age, 65 ± 8 years) underwent echocardiography, coronary multi-detector CT and coronary angiogram were enrolled. In this study, aortic sclerosis was defined as focal areas of increased echogenicity or thickening of aortic valve without restriction of leaflet motion. And peak velocity of aortic valve should be below 2.0 m/s to distinguish aortic sclerosis from aortic stenosis. Echocardiographic severity grading was done by the number of involved leaflets. Results: 48 subjects had aortic sclerosis and 52 subjects had no aortic sclerosis. Aortic sclerosis group were older and had higher left ventricular mass index. There was significant difference in mean value of aortic valve calcium score between 2 groups (64.8 ± 8.25 versus 5.8 ± 37.1, p-value=0.034). However the incidence of angiographic significant coronary artery disease was not different statistically (55.8% versus 58.3%, p-value=0.796). Echocardiographic grading of aortic sclerosis correlated with aortic valve calcium score by Spearmanʼs rank correlation analysis. (Correlation coefficient 0.394, p-value=0.005).Conclusions: There were positive correlation between aortic valve calcium scores by CT and echocardiographic grading of aortic sclerosis.
