Degeneration of intervertebral disc is caused by the decrease in cytokine and increase in factors inducing inflammation, degradation of the extracellular matrix, which damages survival environment of the cells. The intervertebral disc, as an immuno-exemption tissue, provides a benefit to the treatment of the cytokine and gene. Recently, the application of treatment of cytokine and its gene transduced into intervertebral disc becomes a normal method to reverse degeneration of intervertebral disc. Many cytokines and transduced genes can accelerate the synthesis of extracellular matrix, and to delay or reverse intervertebral disc degeneration. Current researches are in experimental phase, and how to lengthen the expression of the gene transfection and how to choose the vector which has features such as high performance and low toxicity will become the emphasis in the future.
