Abstract
Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 2000, Vol 45(2), 202. Reviews The Emerging Role of Counseling Psychology in Health Care (see record 1998-06372-000). The book surveys how counseling psychologists have plied their skills in various areas of health psychology (e.g., cancer, pain management, heart disease) while serving various subgroups (e.g., children, older adults, women, racial and ethnic minorities). The most appropriate audience for this text would be graduate students interested in one or more areas of health psychology. Virtually all chapters provided a basic introduction to a particular topic, along with a list of references that would serve as an excellent start to a dissertation literature review. However, the bookʼs pragmatic usefulness is often purchased at the cost of chapters reading more like an encyclopedia than like a gripping novel. The reviewer doubts that any reader would want to read all of the chapters, unless that reader were taking an exam covering all of the bookʼs contents. The transmittal of current information in several domains of health psychology represents the bookʼs major strength. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
