Abstract
(BJOG 2017;124:1827)Exercise during pregnancy has been discouraged in the past, for fear that it may contribute to preterm labor. While physically demanding work, including heavy lifting, physical exertion and prolonged standing, has been associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, it has been recently suggested that exercise during pregnancy may reduce the risk of preterm birth. The safety and effectiveness of exercise preventing preterm birth is still controversial.
