Abstract
The three prime examples of the Middle Byzantine program of church decoration are introduced, described, and compared in terms of their architecture and programs of mosaics. The mosaics of the eleventh-century churches in Greece—Hosios Loukas, Nea Moni, and Daphni—are shown to be so closely related that it must be assumed that they had shared origins. Their relatives in Cappadocia, six frescoed churches of the tenth century, serve as case studies for a quantitative analysis of all of their programs, as indicated by evidence tabulated in the appendices. Commonalities among the iconography, style, and architectural forms of these examples suggest a possible lost generation of predecessors in the capital city of the empire, Constantinople.
