Export processing zones have been used around the world as a popular neoliberal economic liberalization strategy intended to enhance the position of developing countries in the world market in an era of globalization. In Mexico, this led to the development of the maquiladora export industry, which has been characterized by a high proportion of female employees. This chapter summarizes the currently available quantitative knowledge about Mexican maquiladora workers' health status while illustrating the gaps in knowledge that remain. The chapter concludes by highlighting critical public health concerns that are relevant to other countries that depend on export production as a cornerstone of their development strategies, and discussing policy recommendations for reducing maquiladora workers' health risks.
