Abstract
The previous chapters examined the main forms of intervention in the Histories, and it is now necessary to examine a number of questions that intersect them. The first is the question of the nature of the divine itself, and the character of the language used by Herodotus to describe the intervention. This chapter describes the contradictions in Herodotus' thought, rather than to attempt to rationalize or to reconcile them.
