Abstract
This chapter explains artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), and how these algorithms are used to personalize music services though playlists, to identify promising new artists, and to ensure that your smart speaker plays the correct song when requested. In addition, it covers the various ways that AI will make it simpler to modify existing songs to improve engagement and ultimately to create new, commercially successful musical works. The chapter outlines the legal issues surrounding these new applications, including the licensing of copyrighted works used to “train” these new tools and how artists are reacting to these new capabilities.
