Abstract
This chapter describes the history of distributing music tied to images that began with talking pictures and “Soundies,” which ultimately led to cable technology enabling a channel devoted solely to music videos. It explains how the founders persuaded the music labels to hand over their content and the cable providers to carry the channel, and the role that fans played by loudly proclaiming “I want my MTV.” In addition, it explains how these videos evolved from recordings of live performances to creative works that have stood the test of time and allowed artists such as Michael Jackson and Madonna to achieve even greater popularity. Finally, it covers the role that synchronization rights play for music videos.
