Abstract
Rules and expectations are helpful and necessary for children. They should evolve as children mature, and they should have easily understood reasoning behind them. Creating and keeping rules with consistency and flexibility provide a safe structure within which children can develop resilience and self-determination. Enforcing rules consistently can pose challenges, particularly during adolescence or when your child resists. The authors offer suggestions that parents can apply to make these practices work in their own families.
