Abstract
(b Boom, Belgium, June 29, 1936). Belgian trombonist. He studied piano from 1948 to 1954, in 1966 took up tuba, which he played in a local brass band, and in 1969 changed to trombone and traditional jazz. With his brother Johnny, a trumpeter and the leader of the Red Roses Brass Band, he opened the Jazzclub het Veerhuis in Willebroek in 1970 (see Nightclubs and other venues); the following year they formed the Fondy Riverside Bullet Band, with which Camiel later recorded (Red Roses for a Blue Lady, 1982, Fondy 7775). He made frequent visits to New Orleans, performed at festivals in Europe, and recorded several albums with such musicians as Alvin Alcorn and the pianist Jeannette Kimball. He continued to perform and record with the Fondy Riverside Bullet Band in the 1990s. Van Breedam plays a style of traditional jazz influenced by the work of Jim Robinson. (P. Chielens and J.
