Abstract
[Los Mismos] Mexican band. Founded in the early 1970s and named after an indigenous term meaning “the youngsters” by cousins Marco Antonio (voice) and Joel Solís (guitar). The band became principally known for its romantic ballad repertory, and was also very influential on the developing onda grupera phenomenon. In the mid-1970s two new members joined to add bass and drums, and in the late 1970s keyboards were added as well. With their first album, recorded in 1975, it was clear that the band sought to develop their stylistic profile by featuring cover songs by established balada composers. By the 1980s Marco Antonio Solís had proven to be the creative engine of the band, a position that allowed him to become a powerhouse in the music industry as a much sought after songwriter and producer for renowned balada singers, including Enrique Iglesias. In 1987 the single “Tu cárcel” brought the band unprecedented commercial popularity earning them a diamond record (10 million sales), the first time such recognition had been given to an album released by a Latin American band.
