(b Los Angeles, 8 March 1945). American composer, primarily for film and television. The son and grandson of Salvation Army musicians, he began studying the piano and trumpet by the age of seven and travelled across the western United States throughout his youth, gaining practical experience as a performer in brass bands. He graduated cum laude from the University of Southern California with a composition degree in 1967 and worked at CBS Television through the mid-1970s, first as a music supervisor and then as a composer for series including ‘Gunsmoke’ and ‘Hawaii Five-0’. He became one of television’s leading composers, earning a record ten Emmy Awards from 1981 to 2005 (for such diverse fare as the drama series ‘Dallas’ and the animated ‘Tiny Toon Adventures’; period miniseries like ‘The First Olympics, Athens 1896’; and television films including the Willa Cather adaptation O Pioneers! and the lighthearted Eloise at the Plaza...
