Abstract
(Elizabeth) (b Lakewood, nr Cleveland, OH, Nov 28, 1907; d Bryn Mawr, PA, Aug 21, 2007). American mezzo-soprano, later soprano. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Queena Mario. Originally a soprano, her teachers pushed her toward the mezzo-soprano range after she suffered a bout with laryngitis. Brampton made her debut in 1929 at Chatauqua as Siébel in Gounod’s Faust, and then sang secondary roles with the Philadelphia Grand Opera. She introduced the role of Wood-Dove in the American premiere of Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, garnering critical acclaim. Bampton made her Metropolitan debut in November 1932 as Laura in La Gioconda. She married Met conductor Wilfred Pelletier (who had earlier been married to Mario) in 1937. She soon returned to a soprano repertory, making her soprano debut as Leonora in Il trovatore; her other soprano roles included Aida and Amneris (in the same season), Donna Anna, Alcestis, Elisabeth, Elsa, Sieglinde, and Kundry, continuing until ...
