Abstract
This chapter explains how relaxation skills can help clients manage acute emotional distress resulting from persistent COVID-19 symptoms. It includes psychoeducation about the acute stress response and the psychological basis behind relaxation strategies. Psychoeducation about the fight-or-flight response can help clients recovering from COVID-19 understand why certain physiological sensations arise and continue to be present in moments of acute distress. Clients might require additional sessions if they present with acute emotional distress or need more practice of relaxation skills. The chapter explains that relaxation strategies are behavioral approaches to counteract the acute stress response and to decrease physiological arousal and alleviate symptoms of acute stress.
