Abstract
This chapter covers approaches the therapist can use to facilitate goal setting and enhance motivation in treatment. Goal setting is one of the most effective ways to foster motivation and achieve behavioral change, since setting goals improves the likelihood of successful behavioral change. The chapter includes strategies from Motivational Interviewing, a collaborative, evidence-based approach designed to foster internal motivation. While the facilitation needs only one session, a second session can be helpful to clarify goals for clients having difficulty articulating their goals or suboptimal motivation. At the end of the goal-setting session, therapists should emphasize to the client the importance of home practice during treatment.
