Abstract
(b Prague, Aug 13, 1903; d Prague, Nov 8, 1978). Czech architect. He began his studies at the School of Stonemasonry, Hořice, and then studied architecture with Josef Gočár at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. He was a member of Devětsil, the group of avant-garde writers, artists and architects centred on the figure of Karel Teige; he also joined the Mánes Union of Artists and the Union of Socialist Architects. Although he was among the Rationalists whose work tended towards the International Style, he nevertheless tried to enrich the range of Functionalist architecture with his inventive formal language, as in the skyscraper project (1924; unexecuted) on Wenceslas Square, Prague, or by the inclusion of the fine arts, as in his family tomb chapel (1941), Olšany Cemetery, Prague.
