Abstract
Chinese, 21st century, female. Born 1984, in Shanghai. Media artist. Neuroscience, religion, violence, mortality. Lu Yang lives in China, but prefers not to focus on her nationality, gender, or culture. Yang would instead like to be known simply as an artist, or even beyond that, as someone who lives on the internet. In line with her nonconformist ideals, Yang prefers to make artwork that contains universal meaning, exploring subjects like mortality, neuroscience, religion, violence, and pop culture. Yang graduated in 2010 from the China Academy of Art and has continued to have a successful career as an artist, exhibiting at the Centre Pompidou 2014 Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, and the 2015 Venice Biennale. Yang’s work mixes a variety of mediums including video, drawing, digital painting, animation, and music. For her work Reanimation! Underwater Zombie Frog Ballet! (2011), Yang pushes her exploration of death and neuroscience to its limits. Attaching wires from a midi controller (an electronic drum pad) to the bodies of dissected frogs, the electric current coursing through the frogs’ bodies causes them to appear to dance to a beat....
