Abstract
(b Alkmaar, Feb 27, 1903; d Utrecht, Dec 9, 1980). Dutch art historian. He studied in Utrecht with W. Vogelsang, one of the founders of art history as an academic discipline in the Netherlands. At the same time he was, from 1924, assistant keeper at the Museum Boymans in Rotterdam, where he remained active until 1940. After an interlude in The Hague, as director of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD) and, briefly, of the Mauritshuis as well, van Gelder was appointed to the Utrecht chair of Art History in 1946. The Utrecht Institute for Art History benefited greatly from his qualities as a manager, his numerous international contacts and the inspiring generosity of his teaching. He was a member of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies in 1953–4. Van Gelder’s writings include numerous articles and radio talks addressed to the general public. His professional publications testify to his vast knowledge of Dutch painting and, especially, prints and drawings. He studied such neglected aspects of Dutch 17th-century art as monumental painting at the court of Frederick Henry of Orange Nassau, the significance of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck for the Netherlands in the 17th century, and the history of collecting.
