Abstract
(b Seville, 1680; d Seville, 1759). Spanish painter. He was a pupil of Cristóbal López (d 1730), and he was trained in a style imitative of Murillo. He probably began to paint c. 1700, but his earliest work is undocumented. Ceán Bermúdez stated that Lorente Germán worked as a royal portrait painter during the residence of the court of Philip V and Isabel Farnese in Seville between 1707 and 1734. He acquired a high reputation, and he was nominated for the appointment of Painter to the King when the court returned to Madrid in 1734. Lorente Germán refused the appointment, preferring to remain in Seville. Ceán Bermúdez also stated that the artist was not better known or more widely patronized because of his reserved and melancholic character. Lorente Germán’s production was very uneven, especially in his paintings of subjects of popular devotion such as the Divine Shepherdess.
