Abstract
(b Burgos, c. 1615; d Madrid, c. 1670). Spanish sculptor. He came from Burgos to Madrid, where he is first documented in 1634, when he was contracted to carve a Crucifixion for the Hospital de Antón Martín (in situ), with the stipulation that he was to take as a model a Crucifixion by Sebastián Bejarano in the same church. In 1650 he was commissioned to carve a Reclining Christ and to base it on the renowned Reclining Christ by Gregorio Fernández (c. 1614; Valladolid, Mus. N. Escul.), then in the church of the Jesuit Casa Profesa. The work by Sánchez Barba is probably that in the Carmen church, as it is very similar to his Agony of Christ (Madrid, Caballero de Gracía oratory). This depicts Christ at the moment of his death; it belonged to the Comunidad de Padres Agonizantes, whose members were dedicated to attending the dying.
