American, 19th century, male. Born 1854, in the Mid West; died 1892. Painter. Landscapes. Louis Ritter studied in Cincinnati from 1873 to 1874. He enrolled at the academy in Munich in 1878 along with fellow American Frank Duveneck, and was awarded numerous honours there. After taking a trip to Florence with Duveneck, he returned to Cincinnati. However, Ritter's European works were not well received there, so he moved to Boston, where he became friends with Metcalf.
